Hi .
I’ve decided to open this thread as a tool for practicing English.
It can be used not only as an English chat but also, as a good way to improve our level, if you consider that you don’t have a good level, don’t worry, cause here you’ll be able to learn it too, of course that this will depend on how much people join this forum and support this.
I opened it, cause I’ve read some posts in one of the forums, from many people who seemed to be interested in a forum like this.
I’m also interested in practicing and improving my English level, and maybe here, we could all have a good chance to do it.
Join this forum now!.

Yeah... It´s a good idea to open an english forum.
But I think there is a better one -> Create a forum folder (just like "CPU", or "General") in which all language forums and topics can be placed.
That could be a nice gift for all those "Laneros" interested in forums dedicated to practice NOT only english but some other languages aswell.
What do you think about it JulianD master? =)

By the way...
Anyone, start discussion for an alternative topic!
Not just: Yeah, cool an english forum, etc.

well, why don't we start by talking about our english studies, for example, in my case: what I've learnt , I've done it by myself, no one has taught me,(only basical stuff you learn in school of course ), altought I've had who to practice with, 'cause some friends of mine speak English too.
Anyway, what I've learnt is a consecuence of playing videogames, watching movies; I recommend you to use the closed captioning system when you're watching a movie, it helps you to improve your listening and subtitles usually don't allow u to watch the original captioning in spanish, so this way you're forced to improve your listening abilities.
When you're listening to music (English stuff, of course), it's a good idea to get the lyrics, it's one of the best ways to improve your pronunciation , vocabulary, and listening; but if you think your level is good enough so try to transcribe the song by yourself, I mean, not getting the lyrics from the web.
So what do you think??.
Luis(tm)

I owe my scarce english knowledge to
- Internet articles
- PC Games, specifically Final Fantasy series
I think there is not a more enjoyable way to learn english... Maybe "Poor" english but at least joyous...
Personally think english classes at scool are useless, unless you study big time on your own.
Cya!
PD. Good topic Wigisan

No it isn't. Since there is no a stated topic yet, nothing can be off-topic here. I think it would be better to call it a "Topicless" forum. But this can't remain topicless for too long or will be unuseful, cuz people will avoid to talk about subjects they don't dominate and the improvement will be minimal.
So i suggest to talk about a subject that appeal to all of us (no pc games or cellphones). Maybe we can start telling how do we get to learn the little english we know now and what was the main thing that move you to learn english.
my 2 cents
PD: looking forward krieg's corrections.

It´s simply improve, mejo :)
Hey, does "mejo" have a translation? mmm, jeje, well, it does sound funny pronouncing the letter "j" like a "y" in spanish :p
Let`s start a topic here and give some sense to this forum:
Where did you learn your english?
I lived in the States for about three years, after that all my life has been around computers and music, tastes that requiere english to understand them, well, at least in a technical way.
And today I work in a company whose Manager is a native North American citizen, he brought his business here to Colombia, and so there is a spanglish culture all around the office. One very curious thing is when you´re talking in english with another person that speaks spanish :p, it feels strange, jeje.
Well that´s it for now.

Hey, does "mejo" have a translation?
It's one of these words that you can't translate. You could use bro or something like that instead of "mejo"
Where did you learn your english?
And what if i'm still learning?
I also have a question, I have to use Spanish for this question so excuse me.
Is it correct to use STUFF as a traslation of COSAS??
for example: I brought candies, food, liquour and stuff.

1. I think you had a mistake when you were amending people:
You only use "that" if the next word is a verb. If it is a noun you can skip it.
No. In that case, you can use "that", it depends if u want or not, but it's not a mistake.
Example:
I think you are wrong.
I think that you are wrong.
2.
We need improvemment my english grammar.
You can't use gerund after a verb like "need", you wanted to say:
"I need to improve my English grammar".
3.
I think it is a good idea to practice and improve our english level
When a verb is the subject, you have to use gerund.
Example:
"I think practicing and improving our level is a good idea".

I think that you are wrong.
You made me curious about that because that's the only english class I remember (it was the first one) and I am pretty sure the teacher said removing the 'that' was mandatory. Anyway, I checked in the Internet and found you are right and even there are 3 more rules you have to check before removing the 'that'.
The word that is used as a conjunction to connect a subordinate clause to a preceding verb. In this construction that is sometimes called the "expletive that." Indeed, the word is often omitted to good effect, but the very fact of easy omission causes some editors to take out the red pen and strike out the conjunction that wherever it appears. In the following sentences, we can happily omit the that (or keep it, depending on how the sentence sounds to us):
* Isabel knew [that] she was about to be fired.
* She definitely felt [that] her fellow employees hadn't supported her.
* I hope [that] she doesn't blame me.
Sometimes omitting the that creates a break in the flow of a sentence, a break that can be adequately bridged with the use of a comma:
* The problem is, that production in her department has dropped.
* Remember, that we didn't have these problems before she started working here.
As a general rule, if the sentence feels just as good without the that, if no ambiguity results from its omission, if the sentence is more efficient or elegant without it, then we can safely omit the that. Theodore Bernstein lists three conditions in which we should maintain the conjunction that:
* When a time element intervenes between the verb and the clause: "The boss said yesterday that production in this department was down fifty percent." (Notice the position of "yesterday.")
* When the verb of the clause is long delayed: "Our annual report revealed that some losses sustained by this department in the third quarter of last year were worse than previously thought." (Notice the distance between the subject "losses" and its verb, "were.")
* When a second that can clear up who said or did what: "The CEO said that Isabel's department was slacking off and that production dropped precipitously in the fourth quarter." (Did the CEO say that production dropped or was the drop a result of what he said about Isabel's department? The second that makes the sentence clear.)

Nice forum!
I have a question for you... have anyone take the TOEFL, IELTS, Michigan or any other english test?
I ask this because as many of you, I also learned by myself and I'm willing to take the TOELF or IELTS and I don't know whether my english level is good enough to have a good score.
The objective to take that test is to apply for an immigrant visa in Canada.
I think it's a good idea to put this forum in a Top Level category in order to have faster access to it, because here we'll have to explore some pages to find it when the other forums have more posts.
Good luck for everyone!

I don´t understand the point...
How should i whrite it?
The point is that you can't ask a question twice in the same sentence, I mean, you can't say: do you know what time is it?
The last part shouldn't be a new question: is it? ,is a new interrogative form, so the sentence would be: Do you know what time it is? .
I hope you get the point.

1. I'd say Why haven't I got a lot of money??.
or 2. Why don't I have a lot of money??. altought this form isn't often used.
When you use haven't, ti sounds more like the auxiliar form used in the perfect tenses, I guess that what u really meant when you wrote haven't was a neagtive form from the verb: to have, in that case you should've written the sentence as I have in the second point.
Tell me if I'm wrong... That's what I think...

Nop. I am right and you are wrong :)
English is more picky about double questions and double negations and since I am an engineer I like that.
In case you don't know what a double negation is:
I don't know nothing about history. WRONG.
I don't know anything about history. CORRECT.
Spanish is really weird because double negations are the rule (i.e. Yo no se nada).
PS. I just realized "In case you don't know what a double negation is" is another good example. Do you see the 'is' at the end? It is there because it is not a question.

the right form of writing the second sentence is:
do you know where she lives?
the part that include "she lives" doesn't correspond to the part of the question...it is a the complement, so you should write it in the affirmative o negative form
i.e.

My principal problem with this lenguage ara the "idioms", this is mi bigger trouble; I'm listening and understanding a dialogue, when sudenly...ZUAS, an idiom, and then I get lost.
If somebody knwos common or non common idioms please, write them and traslate for all.

Hi my name is mike and i have been learning english for 24 years, and one day I will be good at it. I am still learning everyday, and am trying to improve my vocabulary.
Here we study english from grade 1 to grade 12 and then some applied english at university, although my mum taught me to read before school.
I can speak english, and know when something is wrong but as for knowing that the subjective pronoun is the third person blah blah blah, I can get a little lost.
Perhaps I am better off trying to answer questions about idiom rather than grammer ( I will leave that to the pedantic german engineer ;D)

sux/sucks is because of the phrase ( and this will likely get moderated) he/she/that sucks dick/ass.
people shortened that to take the rude words off the end so they can say it in front of their parents
that sucks
that obiviously wasn't short enough so we got
sux.

Angle, In the middle of the pacific and Indian oceans are two little Islands. One of them the biggest Island in the world and the other a couple of smaller Islands.
In Australia (Oz) live Aussies (Sometimes called skippy's by other peoples because of a really bad tv show we had here once called "skippy the bush kangaroo")
In the other Islands (New Zealand) live kiwi's, so called because of the national fauna of new zealand, a flightless bird called a kiwi.
Bush here is used as term for regional areas where there is a light foliage cover known as scrub.
Most of our idioms are to do with drinking, I guess its like the eskimos and words for snow.
Ok IF you want you can all ask questions in english about here, and germany and their beer and sausages.

The main problem in Colombia is people don't learn good english in the school. And the people who learned something (by themselves or taking lessons) are too shy to speak, that's why lot of people answer "Lo entiendo pero no lo hablo" when you ask them if they speak english.

or maybe you have to buy the camera and get one another power cord, compatible with ur camera and the switch in america

Throughput,
I use this term to refer to an amount that can be actually passed through, or put through a link. It is not a measurement like bandwidth but refers to the actual amount transported on a link. Be it a PCB bus or a network cable.
Does that help elucidate the concept?

Most of the south american countries use 110v @ 60Hz except Brasil, Chile and Argentina (as far as I remember). Anyway, most of the chargers for electronic devices nowdays work with 110 and 220. I myself have a rechargable camera (Canon) and it works everywere and the camara is already 3 years old. Just check the charger of the camara before buying. You will have problems with the connectors but you can buy adapters. In Colombia we use the 2 plain pararel connectors (USA).

Well, Hi everybody.
I´m Edd, I'm twety two years old. I'm From Santa Marta, the America's Pearl or the most beauty bay in America.
I Study Systems Engineering In the University of Magdalena, and I'm in the Tenth Semester.
All the english than I know was learned in my high School (as you can see) and by my own. I was convinced than i was in a good level of english, but I realized than that was False.
I don't have aspirations to follow the studies of english, because in everywhere only teach english of the United States. This is a very vicious english (grammarly speaking) and besides I hate the United States. Now, I want to learn some other languages like Deustch, French or Japanese, since my desire is to travel to another countries differents from what most people desire (like Canada, Australia, Germany, or Japan).
Thanks to everybody and correct me if I write something wrong

You learn a lot watching DVD movies. If your understanding is not very good what you can do is you watch the movie with english subtitles and when you dont get what they say you read the titles. Television in english with closed caption would help in the same way.

But, i would love to live some time in England cause they have a great acent (acent? accent??).
America seems fun, but the "American Life" doesn't feel good, maybe Canada, people says that it's one of the better places to live (with Australia, i think).
And finally, Japan it's not a english speaking country directly, but they speak Japanese AND English nationally, so, i would like to live there and take a peek into their big culture.

Hello, this is my first time in here in the English Forum, I would like to live also in England, why¿¿¿¿ because I think, is the best country to learn English, They brought the English to the world (that's wath I think), I don't like Australia because I don't undeerstand anything they say. Each country has their accent, but in the schools, our teachers accustom us to the American English, so when we hear an English or an Australian accent, we don't understand many of what they say (well, that's my case).

England? pretty nice country I must say. I havn't had the opportunity to go visit, but as far as I'm concern that's the first country in the travel list around Europe, second will be Italy and third is Greece.
Does anyone watch the "As If" tv program? that's a good chance to try and understand the british accent.
I think Great Britain would be a good country to try and learn engilsh, good english. Obviuosly you should be capable to understand and speak with amercian accent, since that is the most widely used in countries close to us.

That's a good question, I'd also like to know how this system works, but there's something I've realized: once you become into a LANero Plus, you get your karma increased it doesn't matter if you're a newbie or a known member..
If you want to become a Lanero Plus you'll have to give a fee for this..

Karma is a reputation that you start to get when you post messages that are good.
Only people can give you more Karma and only if they want, do you see the ying yang symbol next to your avatar?? well, when people think your post is really good they click that symbol and give you "karma", "karma" can be good and bad so if you post bad messages you can also be bad qualified and you can lose reputation.
This link explains you how many points you need to go to the next level.
http://www.laneros.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=11280
When you become a LANero Plus you automatically get 100 karma points, click the following link in order to get more information about LANeros Plus

whether and if
Both conditional but when to use what. Basically if is the common one, that is used most of the time, whether is usually past tense and generally third person. Use if until you become sure of where whether is appropriate, If will sound right most all of the time.
Stuff is not really a noun in proper english and is used as a verb for filling something with another thing. using it as a noun is something that people so but it is not really formal english. It is not pluralised, and not often used to describe a definate article. I mean it is not used to say " I have two stuffs here" it would be " I have some stuff here" or " I have stuff to do" rather than "Ihave two stuff to do".
Thing how ever is like a retarded version of cosa and can be used for a definate article. " I have two things in my bag" and " I have two things to do" . Personally I prefer the use of thing as opposed to stuff, as it sound more mature and has that specificity should you require it. It also can be used in a general nature, like stuff, If you pluralise the noun but dont define the amount " I have things to do" " I have things in my bag".
I hope that helps, Let me know if that is of benefit.
-Mike.

Mobile virus infects Lexus cars
by David Quainton
Lexus cars may be vulnerable to viruses that infect them via mobile phones. Landcruiser 100 models LX470 and LS430 have been discovered with infected operating systems that transfer within a range of 15 feet.
"If infected mobile devices are scary, just thinking about an infected onboard computer..," said Eugene Kaspersky, head of anti-virus research at Russian firm Kaspersky. "We do know that car manufacturers are integrating existing operating systems into their onboard computers (take the Fiat and Microsoft deal, for instance)."
It is understood the virus could affect the navigation system of the Lexus models, it transfers onto them via a Bluetooth mobile phone connection. It is still unclear whether the cars in question use the Symbian operating system which has recently been under attack from various worms and viruses.
"At this stage it's still early but it just goes to show that technology has consequences," said David Emm, senior technology consultant at Kaspersky. "It's scary stuff."
Vulnerable operating systems are increasingly moving onto a number of different devices. Last year the Slammer worm infected 13,000 Bank of America ATMs as a result of them moving to a Windows-based operating system.
"I've even seen screenshots of major commercial aeroplanes with Windows 2000-based operating systems," said Mikko Hypponen, director of anti-virus research at Finnish firm F-Secure. "Cars are an obvious target for viruses. It's okay if you don't use the operating system for the engine and the brakes, but when you do..."
Bill Gates is a known Lexus driver. In 1999 he auctioned one for charity.
When contacted Lexus declined to comment.

It it unbeliavable to see that the future is here among us, and we can't be sure of it.
It is awful to think that anybody with the experience to hack and infect OS can by simply getting near to your car infect it with a virus. I can not believe this really, we have to domain this technology before we can use it for this kind of functions.
Damn BG.
