The UK Accent is better than the US accent... Why???

The UK accent is so much "refined" than the US accent, although US is more rich than UK, the people wants to have the real accent of the idiom, also the UK accent is in "fashion" (I think fashion is just for clothes, for that reason please somebody write the real word).

However, I didn't find the first school or college that uses the UK accent...

Yes i do, but sometimes is quite difficult to catch some of the words when i am listening at BBC World.

I like Caribean accent also -which is spoken in Jamaica, trinidad and barbados-. They take their time to pronounce and speak properly and is very easy to understand them.

American accent is awful because they speak so fast.

The Uk and the US accent is almost impossible to understand when are listened for a Spanish person, the Jamaica accent is almost a spanish accent, We have to listen the real accent of the idiom!

Is too easy to understand the english idiom if a colombian person speaks, but this idiom is used for gringos, I don't understand this accent, for that reason I've to see the "load caption, I've to improve my english...

WOAH ! back up here.
(England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland)

These are hugely diffferent accents !
Even within England you have a huge range of Accents . Even I struggle to understand the Welsh because of the heavy Celtic influence on their language.

This is like saying do you like the Colombian/Argentine/Chilean accent?

I like the brisbane accent, nice and clear.

What EnempE says is true... there is a huge number of different accents in the British Isles... I do speak English but I was once approached by an Irishman and couldn't make out a word of what he was saying.... and I later learned that he was just asking what my name was!!! With a little bit of background noise and concentration lacking, English spoken by Scotsmen, Irishmen and Welshmen is basically unintelligible if you're very used to the American accent. Worse with the Welshmen, who actually sometimes speak Welsh...

This is a cultural issue. It almost quite depends on the accent you've been exposed to. However, my case is unique. I was taught with both Brittish and American books. Yet, I got used to American accent due to the huge amount of American shows, movies, and news we're bombarded with not only in our country but along Latin America. =)

I prefer American English coz it's the one tha I was taught (I studied the language for about 16 months here in my country and then I moved to the States and lived there for almost 2 years).
I find American English pretty easy to understand and somehow "friendly"....
On the other hand, British English sounds nice but sometimes it happens to drive me crazy (specially Irish ans Scottish English).

hi, i am not gonna tell you, wich one i prefer,, but i think, that for us, the us english and accent is more useful, 'cause we are here in america and most of the english speakers that come to our country are from usa and canada..... another thing i wanna tell you is that, i dont like canada style,,, right now i'm studying english in vancouver, and the guys here speak like "ronroneando" (jeje sorry for the spanish word, but i dont know how is the word in english),,, and besides canada's english, is a mix of many cultures, like italian, hindu, japanese, chinese...........and more asian countries, so its kind of different and hard to learn because almos the 70% of your classmates are asian, and they have Enormous pronunciation problems, because in their languages they never pronounce the R...., and another sounds, for example they dont say "I THINK". they say I Zhink.....and they will make slowly your learning proceses....

Hi
I would have to say that the best accent is the Irish, not in general because some of them have a very strong accent but there are some of them that have a sort of mild accent that is just beautiful to listen to, I wouldn't know how to describe it but I’ve always loved it.

Personally I'm more familiar with the kind of English they speak in the US, but at a time in my life when I lived in England I got to understand and actually picked up the regular british accent after a while.

I think every accent in the English speaking countries has it's own particular appeal with the exception of the accent of the people from India, Sri lanka, Pakistan, etc. which I really dislike.

Wel, actually you could argue that the australian accent is the older accent. As it has been affected by other languages the least. We have been isolated for 200 years with little outside interaction.

I've been teaching English for 6 years now and I think accents just can't be better one from another. Their validity can't be judged by their own characteristics. All this stuff about accents is a bias people try to spread, just by saying: i.e "British English is for educated people, american english sucks". I'm a bachelor in Modern Languages and I had both English and AMerican teachers. I took the most of both and I learned useful things to communicate at any level. my accent is quite american since I spent long hours with american people, but it doesn't make me a "better" speaker.

PS: Spanish from Bogota rulz!!!! LOL, LOL!

Greetings to everyone.

I totally agree with joyo22. We just shouldn't say that one accent is better that other. Doing so, we would be saying then that some people are better that others. If you're a Colombian, and suddenly someone tells you that the best spanish is the original from Spain, what would you say to that? They have their accents as well as we do have ours.

In my case, I speak better American than I do British, due to the fact that I've been exposed to more American accent than British one. Don't get me wrong, I like British a lot. But it's better if you stick to the accent that you prefer.

guajajaj, that is so true hiada, even if they are just learning english, holy cow, it's so hard to understand them.

Also with Chinese people, OMG, I remember that in the writing test they used to get really good marks, but normally I used to think that they didn't know english, cause when they talk, their accent is so fuked up, that you don't know if they are talking in english or in mandarin or else :P.

I remember when I saw interviews made by American journalists to people from the middle east. Their pronunciation can be anything but something similar to American or British English. I don't know how these journalists get everything that they say, I can barely get one or 2 words of what they say :muerto:

you know Oe, people get use to it, an example is that many people here in the town where I live, understand Latin accent, and we know that this accent is easy to understand, but I have met some people that really, they don't get a F word of what you say because they are not used to this accent, sometimes the same happens to me.

Hey you guys, look what I found :P, is a really nice video, I really like it...
Believe it or no, Canadians and Americas have some kind of conflict between their cultures... that here is more liberal and there is more this, and that. stuff like that... anyways here is the video ;).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXtVrDPhHBg

Hey, I'm not a lumberjack, or a fur trader....
I don't live in an igloo or eat blubber, or own a dogsled....
and I don't know Jimmy, Sally or Suzy from Canada,
although I'm certain they're really really nice.

I have a Prime Minister, not a president.
I speak English and French, not American.
And I pronounce it 'about', not 'a boot'.

I can proudly sew my country's flag on my backpack.
I believe in peace keeping, not policing,
diversity, not assimilation,
and that the beaver is a truly proud and noble animal.
A toque is a hat, a chesterfield is a couch,
and it is pronounced 'zed' not 'zee', 'zed' !!!!

Canada is the second largest landmass!
The first nation of hockey!
and the best part of North America

My name is Joe!!
And I am Canadian!!!

australian english SUKZ so much, don't ask me why, it just does lol
american :S not that good i guess
but canadian is the freaking worst for me, it even sounds like too "frenchy" for me , but still, at least in medellin, that is the accent a lot of people prefer, and again, i haven't the foggiest idea why :O, it is just strange for me , and don't like it.

well then, no matter what accent do u have , english is english, no problem there, but still some are harder to understand, but it s just a matter of time .

English accents... well.. There is absolutely no doubt that liking a certain accent is one thing.. But honestly deciding which accent or way of speaking is the best is rather easy if: 1st. You actually speak and understand English and 2nd. You have had experience hearing and dealing with people that are from those countries because what you hear on TV often differs from reality. Do not forget that actors have intensive pronunciation and diction classes before they can actually become one.

British english is by FAR a more refined, and properly pronounced and used English. you do not need to go very far to realise that..! take the word "water" for example.. American English = Warer, British English = Water, or "Route" American English = Raute (Not in every state though), British English = Route

Enough said.. we all are entitled to our personal opinions, but the above mentioned are Facts not my opinion
