Hi guys (and girls)!
I'm trying to improve my english using software and multimedia tools. I have got some stuff so far, but I want to get more!
I think that it's not necessary to go to a formal school to learn english, you can learn it just with a PC and the adecuate software.
Maybe we can share (if it's legal) or just recommend software here.
I already have the following:
* Interactive English (1 CD)
* Welcome on Board (14 CDs)
This two are good but just for the basic level
* Multimedia CDs - Level I and II of KOE Corporation (14 CDs)
I don't like this course because it's very based on translation, but was usefull for pronunciation.
* WordHacker Gold Edition.
This software is a dictionary with more than 20.000 words. Every word has its pronunciation and meaning. I really like it!
Soon, I'm going to get:
* The Rosseta Stone level I, II and III (3 CDs)
And we will see...

it's ok that you get some software aids... besides that, try to practice the most you can, via MSN, reading English-speaking newspapers... and so on

My English teacher gave me last week a CD which contains a program called "Pronunciation Power". It shows you how to pronunciate in the right way (using the IPA alphabet) and you can use your mic to record your voice and make some comparisons with the machine's voice. 120% recommended =)

Well, If you want to learn some theory about pronunciation, then check this software:
Sephonics - Learn The IPA Alphabet
http://www.wartoft.nu/software/sephonics/
It's free!!!
I have got the Longman Preparation course for TOEFL test (or something like that). But I don't have used it yet.

Thanks guys.
Actually, I have got "Ingles sin Barreras" and I'm studying with it.
If anyone is interested in trades, I'll be waiting.
I don't want to download because my conection is not so powerfull.
Think it, if we join efforts, then we'll have a lot of resources to help us for english learning.
See you.

Good to hear that!
Well, Right now my PC is broken, so I have been studying english with the "Ingles sin Barreras" audio stuff only.
With a mp3 player I have been listening the audio stuff. That is really cool because I was able to study even traveling in a bus.
And the day before yesterday I bought a DivX compatible DVD Player. And yesterday I began to study using the video.
The course fits in two DVDs with the audio (mp3), the videos (divx) and the manuals (pdf). A friend of mine, downloaded it.
I'm looking for the ESL PRO series of interactives courses. So if you have a "backup" of that courses, I'm interested in a exchange. MP please. But right now, with my PC broken, I want videos that can be reproduced in a standalone DVD player.
Write you later...

A private teacher can ve expensive, but it works better. Try to make a group of 3 or 4 to make it cheaper, and accord something with your possible teacher.

For me it's been better to improve my english with those advanced grammar books, like "how english works" and some others from Cambridge or Oxford. You can find them like e-books.
I have Tell Me More English 7, Rosetta Stone 1-2, Pimsleur for spanish speakers 1-2-3, talk to me and anther course (dont remember the name), I liked a lot Pimsleur method (Audio and some readings), so right now i'm learning German and French with this brand. Tell Me More from Auralog is very good as well, it has lots of topics and exercises, Talk to me is from Auralog too, but not as big as TMM. Rosetta Stone uses an interesting native-method that puts you straight into the language you are studying.
BTW i need to re-study some english grammar....

i recommend viewing anime or any other video in english. at first it might be difficult, but you get used to it after some time. When you get used, you ralize that you can watch the video without concerning about english...you just hear and understand everything. Its a great excercise to " sharpern" your year.
bye

- You should take an English course with teachers, books and all the support that you need. Not the ones that you buy to learn by yourself. That's the best way to learn the basics.
- Deberías tomar un curso de Inglés con profesores, libros y todo el soporte que usted necesite. No los que usted compra para aprender por usted mismo. Esa es la mejor manera de aprender lo básico.

The best way to learn english by yourself is making the process fun. That's the only tip you really need. You can try with the best teacher you can hire, but only if you really like to learn, you will.
If you really want to learn by yourself you must follow this:
1. get a basic grammar book for the fundamentals. (Ingles Basico A. Gio is a good one)
2. get english literature and enjoy it, (I used to read comic books).
3. watch movies with english subtitles (closed caption)
4. learn and sing enlgish songs (I liked romantic pop)
5. start writing a journal in enlgish.
6. Chat with native english speakers
I haven't studied english with a teacher, but I can maintain (and I do) a converstion with northamerican people. I'm engineer and I usually get visits from people around the world. My level isn't perfect (and it's far) but it works for me.
So, you really don't need to get a teacher for that. Just your dedication and effort.
See you.

The institute I work at, is currently using Tell Me More; we've found this program extremely useful since it allows students to be aware (by practicing) of the different skills they are expected to develop in English.
BTW, I strongly recommend the next "text to speech" software: Voice MX Studio and Talk Any, these will let you practice writing and listening (Talk Any may also be very fun to use). Both programs can be found almost anywhere on the web, Talk Any is 100% freeware and Voice MX Studio will work for a certain period time, then you'll be prompted to buy a license.
Cheers

Ok, this is not a software but it has helped me a lot in pronunciation and speaking, I would recommend it to anyone, for sure you aren't going to need any teacher with this system, it's called: Pimsleur just, google it
Also you must get an ipod and check the podcasts about ESL, here is a link with more info: learnoutloud/ (http://www.learnoutloud.com/)
And for the grammar, you can get any book because after you know the correct pronunciation of the words, it'll be a breeze to go into the grammar.
I was tired with the softwares and now I'm trying with the ipod stuff.
See you.

I'm learning basic English with Tell me more 8.0, Learn To Speak ENglish, and English Plus, that last one is too old but have a lot of exercices.
And the best of three is Tell me more, you can choose three options to learn according to you. The speaking exercices analize your voice and check if it is good or bad.
it's good what i said?? I'm begginer!!

I installed Rosetta Stone for my wife. I can recommend that program.
You have to find time (1 hour, three times a week) to study. It really works.
She was using Ingles sin Barreras, before Rosetta Stone. There is a huge difference
