The best way is to take a plane, go to United States and let yourself alone in Mid-USA where nobody speaks Spanish :P

True. The best way to practice is placing yourself in situations where your only option is to speak English because no one understands Spanish.
I'd say the next best thing is to use Skype or MSN to chat with English-speaking friends. And listening to spoken English, for example, in soap operas or sitcoms, doesn't hurt. :D

yes i am with you luis........, right now i'm in canada,, speaking spanish all the time, it is just stupid because of the money and many things, but here with my high school's friends like i am here, it is impossible to speak english with theme,,,,, the only advice i can give you, is to watch tv, all the time, specially shows like friends, seinfeld and these kinds of shows.......

Good webpage there... it's nice because it brings up one of the WORST things of Colombians... two simple rules to step on people's feet no matter what (probably the only two rules we actually play by). We should open up a whole new thread on the subject.

There are many ways to practice and improve your English, but please do NOT use translation into Spanish.. like translating songs, or trying to translate everything you listen to. You really have to push yourself to try to think in English, (which is one of the most dificult things to do).
Start with watching CNN International. Or something else, with NO subtitles... not EVEN in English. This, in order to practice your Listening Skill. If you have any kind of subtitles, even in English as well, you will not practice Listening. DVDs with no Subtitles...
Try to read some books in English, try the news on Internet, try using an English Dictionary, not a bilingual one.
And if you have any friends that speak English, dude, practice with them. Don't worry about your accent. You'll acquire it when you travel.
And obviously, taking an English course, won't hurt>D
Cheers mate

If you don't have the money to travel, the best way to learn is reading and watching TV. Try the news channels like fox or cnn, they are a bit more hard to understand, but as time goes on, you'll get to understand most of it.
I would suggest also having a friend or someone you talk to very often that speaks english also and want to practice with you.

Travelling to a country (and living there, at least for a while) where English is spoken as a native language, is certainly the best option, not only for those who need to learn the language, but also for those who want to improve their linguistic competence. However, there are many other ways to "expose" yourself to the language. Internet is actually one of the best sources, you can download videos, audio, texts, etc.... For instance, I recently downloaded a full English version of a beautiful book: "The Little Prince". I had already read that book when I was in high school, I thought it was so wonderful that I decided to read it again.... (this time in English, obviously ;))

All of you are right guys there are many ways to practice and improve your English... but everyone has a particular way to learn .. I like to read some books in English and to try news online to improve the vocabulary ..and the movies !! but for me one of the most important thing is to think in english ... I know it is dificult but actually it has worked a lot for me ... just do not translate into spanish .. It wont work.. and other good idea: get a friend to talk in english!!!:P

Well, yeah... you certainly made some mistakes, but the overall is pretty good.
I could actually understand what you meant to say.
If you're learning English on your own, then you're doing great so far. You just need to improve your spelling and keep on practicing.
Keep Up ;)

I'm, watching movies with subs in Eng..... other way is searching the lyric of my favorite music in spanish.
Another way is playing games in English, that;s necessary to know what's saying, for make a puzzle or something like.
And ..... my better way to learn is translate trailers of apple trailers to Spanish, and some Asian movies. That is my better way to learn without a teacher on you.

febrero 2, 2007, 10:11
Yep, I agree, there's no doubt that watching subtitled movies is a great way to get your english level improved, specially your listening. On the other hand, lately I've been watching american series like Heroes, Prison Break, 24, smallville, among others with no subtitles at all and i'm very surprised about how good my listening is now. I definetely think this method is the best one for that purpose, although it's hard to start to practice this way if your listening isn't good from the beginning.
// K r L o S \\
febrero 4, 2007, 02:32
like i'd said, watch series in english with subtitles in english is very helpfull, but, another way, is just listening, even with your eyes close, and with someone else watching the same (with subtitles): you tell what they (in the movie, series , whatever)are saying, and he/she tells you if it's ok or don't.....don't you think?, I've practice this already, and it works very well... :)

what do you think about softwares as way to learn english?
I think that's a good way to improve listening and Speaking skills. At least you have text with audio to compare the words with their correct pronunciation and try to do it by yourself.
You can use software to improve your knowledge as a complementary tool for your regular English course.

I'm think that could be diffetents ways to learn English, for example:
1.- Take a course of English Class in your country.
2.- Talk to somebody by phone in USA and try to speak with some American Peoples.
3.- Only, if you have money, you can travel to USA and Practice where they know 0%Spanish, like 6 weeks or more time.... please, dont' try to go to USA likes a Indocument Person... it's dangerous...
4.- Buy a Course for your Home, with test and listening records to learn English... that's good idea.

This song is dedicated to the Clapton's son who fell from a balcony:(, I don't know the exact age of the kid but is so sad anyway. On this song (a very succesfull one) Clapton expresses his pain for the loss, so much that even the heaven cries. Best possible way to learn english is to simply go to either The US (NOT New Yor or Los Angeles) or the United Kingdom as suggested earlier on this forum, but obviously that is not an option for many of us; so I suggest you guys do what I did... Get yourselves an english speaking buddy and watch English TV, and EVERYTHING you hear and dont understand, LOOK it up in a dictionary.. understand what it means and practice it endlessly for the following week with your buddy until it sticks!!! until you sound like a Disco rayado!!!
Worked for me...
HRC-Ivancho (http://www.laneros.com/member.php?u=7555) is completely right!! do that.. and another suggestion... try to learn complete sentences.. example: "I hear you have been looking for me" "Is everything OK" "How have you been" it is easier when speaking and eliminates the -putting words together- bit

Huh. Well. I have a lot of methods in my learning of this amazing language: Listening music and writing some articles in English. Chatting with my foreigner friends by using MSN and Yahoo Messenger. Also translating long phrases and getting the most important idea of it. And it really works for me a lot of. Regards and Happy Holidays.

Practice makes perfection pal, that's what they say. So, keep coming to practice your grammar and writing bro.
A key point in obtaining fluency is focusing on new vocabulary, specially synonyms. In that way, we can stop using adjectives such as important replacing them with others like relevant, pertinent, a must, etc.
You can try here: http://www.synonym.com/synonyms/
To practice listening, I recommend you to play songs in english and read lyrics at the same time. Another good way to do so is to watch CNN International or BBC World news using close captioning so that you can read what is being said. Then , you can move into doing the same with movies (in english and close captioned in the same language). In order to become more familiar with idioms (idiomatic cultural expressions) you can watch the same movie several times so that you can catch the whole thing.
Greetings =)

Well folks...I'm an English teacher and I strongly believe that the best way to practice English (Basically Reading and Listening, maybe some speaking too) is by watching movies with Engish subtitles and trying to repeat every sentence you catch; it worked for me when I was at the university, and it should worked for most of you...that's my opinion. Greetings!!!

That's OK NANDO77, but try to do it with simple songs first (ballads) so that you don't have to deal with too complex lyrics.

Someone can be both teacher and professor simultaneously. If you work at a school in the morning shift and is also member of a given faculty at a university in the evening shift.
Greetings and happy new year =)

how to improve your pronuncaition
Here's How:
Learn the following rules concerning pronunciation.
English is considered a stressed language while many other languages are considered syllabic.
In other languages, such as French or Italian, each syllable receives equal importance (there is stress, but each syllable has its own length).
English pronunciation focuses on specific stressed words while quickly gliding over the other, non-stressed, words.
Stressed words are considered content words: Nouns e.g. kitchen, Peter - (most) principle verbs e.g. visit, construct - Adjectives e.g. beautiful, interesting - Adverbs e.g. often, carefully
Non-stressed words are considered function words: Determiners e.g. the, a - Auxiliary verbs e.g. am, were - Prepositions e.g. before, of - Conjunctions e.g. but, and - Pronouns e.g. they, she
Read the following sentence aloud: The beautiful Mountain appeared transfixed in the distance.
Read the following sentence aloud: He can come on Sundays as long as he doesn't have to do any homework in the evening.
Notice that the first sentence actually takes about the same time to speak well!
Even though the second sentence is approximately 30% longer than the first, the sentences take the same time to speak. This is because there are 5 stressed words in each sentence.
Write down a few sentences, or take a few example sentences from a book or exercise.
First underline the stressed words, then read aloud focusing on stressing the underlined words and gliding over the non-stressed words.
Be surprised at how quickly your pronunciation improves! By focusing on stressed words, non-stressed words and syllables take on their more muted nature.
When listening to native speakers, focus on how those speakers stress certain words and begin to copy this.
Tips:
Remember that non-stressed words and syllables are often "swallowed" in English.
Always focus on pronouncing stressed words well, non-stressed words can be glided over.
Don't focus on pronouncing each word. Focus on the stressed words in each sentence.
Happy New Year!!!!!
Well I think it was a typing mistake.. thanks anyway!!!
B.T.W: You haven't answered my question??? You said you were an English Professor... then I asked you "Are you a Professor or just a Teacher???" because they aren't the same thing my friend...I guess you know that...Geeetings!!!

i did learn english (at least most of it) in videogames (believe it or not), and in TV shows, and i haven't go to another country (not with english like primary language).
PD: my post can be full of mistakes but you get the idea.
C U
Mistakes you have made:
"I haven't gone", but you should have written "I haven't been to" or "I have never been to"
"not with English like" use as instead
and few others
But I got the idea, though and that's what really matters
