Well, I took a course in the second half of 2003 and I finished it last year. I didn't take an intensive course because I didn't have enough time and that's why it took more time than expected. Anyway, I haven't finished my learning process yet, there's a lot of things left to learn in order to improve my English level.

You learn English everyday (if in touch with the language on a regular basis)and will stop learning the day you die.

although most of what I've learned has been all by myself, I've attended to a coulple of courses. The first one when I was in high school, it only lasted 4 months but i learned a lot of grammar. A month ago I had an interview which worked as a placement test, and i guess I must've done it pretty well, 'cause i was inmediatly sent to the advanced classes which are focused on spoken English, and I only have two months lef to get my diploma, so the interview helped to to skip most of the levels :D It's been great, I think these classes have really helped me to improve my listening and fluency skills. So summarizing I've studied English for 5 months, but of course that most of it is up to you and only by practicing everyday you can learn many things that aren't taught in classes and get your level improved.

It's a continuous process. You're not meant to stop learning, specially if you are in touch with the language. I've been self-learning (never been in an english school or the likes of) for, like, 20 odd years now, but I still got so many to learn.
i think you never stop learning english, the ideal is if you can have a partner for practice a lot

I agree, not even the native people stop learning, is like Spanish we always learn more and more

since 2001, without a english course, only with videos and music. I think that the english is learned with practice (although the english courses are a great help).

I took a BBC ENGLISH COURSE by 10 months. That was 10 year ago. I'm still learnig by myself watching tv, listening to the music. The problem is I don't have a partner to practice with. So I think i'm gonna die and i'm not gonna learn a lot. I mean I just want my englisg to be fluid and I want to undestand everything . When I wach TV I don't cath everything...What can I do to learn fast?

I have studied for near 3 years, but the best way to learn is practice, watch TV shows, try to learn with the activity that you like very much, if you enjoy listen music, just practice with that... the more the better.

well.. I have no idea abt it, just practicing, I guess abt 6 months to understand n talk, n a lifetime to learn/understand/use slang, I think its different when u r exposed to the enviroment, and ofcourse what _AXL_ said its totally true, Videogames (and u being interested abt understanding what the duck r u doing in the game) will help a lot!
Best regards n remeber is not the same to fuc.k a duc.k than to duc.k a fuc.k
Good Luck!

Hi there,
Well it has taken me over two years. I'd say like three to four.
You are actually very quick but I assume it has to do with your ability to learn languages and how much effort you put into it.
congrats!

It took me 3 Months.
I was 13 and made a trip to the U.S. with my parents. I was afraid to talk in english but I was able to understand pretty well. Nobody but my family spoke english and all tv and radio stations were in english too.

I've never make an intensive course or a kind of, i just begin for myself to understand the English Songs, the came the online videogames, where u use to speak with the other players, then i became an addict to LOST and also a fan of Prison Break, i use to see many movies and play many videogames, so, in that process i can say... 5 years from now.

Since english is not our born language the learning and comprhension process will never stop. The languages are constantly evolving therefor it is a constatnt process the learning of new words, slang terms etc... that's nothing to worry abot anyway, english speakers (americans most of all) doean't even speak their born language very well :P

No matter if English is or not you native language, It takes all of our live to learn. I have seen british people in forums which have a bad writing... You knew that Australian Immigration are asking the IELTS test to British who want to live here?

It's the same with us, we're born and grow with spanish, but almost everyday we learn something new in our language.

23 years and I still don't know a lot of things I should... from time to time I make silly mistakes, but everyday I learn new things...
It took me 6 months to be able to understand and follow up a conversation with a native, but even now sometimes I don't understand 100% (still got the main idea, but i get lost with some idiums and expressions).
English is not that difficult, but there's something I think I won't be able to do ever: real time translation :S I cannot do it without saying robot-like translations in both languages...
