pego aqui los comandos que acabo de utilizar para resolver un problema de resolucion de pantalla en ubuntu, tal vez a alguien mas le pueda servir.

con el uso de la herramienta xrandr yo queria que subiese a 1280 x 1024 y solo salia en 1024 x 768
toco hacer esto:

para ver el estado actual de las cosas:
xrandr -q --verbose
(da lo mismo xrandr --prop --verbose)

sacar los parametros correctos para usarlos en la adici'on de un nuevo modo en xrandr
cvt 1280 1024 60

esto da:

('VGA' es el nombre del output, 'default' no sirve)

luego con esos params, se puede agregar el modo:

xrandr --newmode "1280x1024_60.00" 109.00 1280 1368 1496 1712 1024 1027 1034 1063 -hsync +vsync

xrandr --addmode VGA 1280x1024_60.00


despu'es de eso con
xrandr --prop
se debe poder revisar que el modo est'e ah'i.

y al final se ajusta la resolucion seleccionando el modo:
xrandr --output VGA --mode 1280x1024_60.00

para que los cambios se guarden al reiniciar toco hacer esto:

en ~/.xprofile se guardan los comandos relevantes

puse antes del exit 0 los siguientes comandos

xrandr --output VGA --mode 1280x1024_60.00
