¿Porqué me hizo tantos cambios al actualizar?

Que tal!, ya tenía tiempo que no agarraba linux (uso kubuntu 6.06) y hace rato que lo inicié me marcó que había muchos programas por actualizar y lo actualizé.

Cuando reinicié el equipo me di cuenta que me cambió el grub y me puso más opciones de arranque y me quitó la opción de iniciar con windows XP. Para que vean más o menos como estaba antes esto es lo que tenía el archivo de grub antes de que actualizara:

Entonces lo de windows lo solucioné copiando el texto:

dentro del archivo /boot/grub/menu.lst y ya me aparece en la opción de arranque y ya puedo iniciar windows. Pero mi principal duda es que hasta arriba me aparece la opción de arranque "Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.15-26-386" (por cierto yo ni sabía que también me iba a actualizar el kernel) pero cuando intento entrar a esta después de que carga la barra y cuando ya debería de entrar al modo gráfico para pedirme la contraseña solo se queda la pantalla negra con el logotipo de kubuntu y con la barra vacía sin mostrar ningún avance.

Con todas las demás opciones si puedo entrar a kubuntu (con kernel 2.6.15-25 y 2.6.15-23) entonces quisiera saber si alguien puede ayudarme a enterder esto:

¿Porqué me actualizó el kernel si no se lo pedí?
¿Porqué me agregó más opciones de arranque y me quitó la de windows?
¿Porqué no puedo entrar a la de kernel 2.6.15-26?

Espero que me puedan ayudar un poco.

Mejo... ubuntu NO te actualiza el kernel si no lo autorizas (hay que ver bien que actualizaciones va a hacer en el gestor de paquetes).
Por otro lado, las opcionea adicionales son porque tenés un kernel nuevo... lo raro es que te hubiese borrado la entrada de windows... :S

por otro lado.. ¿has intalado hardware nuevo ultimamente?
 
A mi también me sucedió eso. Me acuerdo que tenía al Windows XP en la primera posición de la lista para que los que demás que usan mi PC no se perdieran, pero al instalar el kernel borró de la lista la entrada de Win XP. Menos mal siempre tengo una copia del código dentro del mismo archivo pero con un '#' al principio de cada linea por si las moscas.
 
para que no les pase eso... no copien la entrada del Windows al principio del grub, simplemente hagan uso de la opción default en el mismo archivo de configuración.
Así:
