Exclusive: Mecachrome applies for Formula 1 engine tender

Mecachrome has joined the bidding process to supply Formula 1 with an independent engine from 2017, and revealed to Motorsport.com the first images of what its new engine could look like.
With Ilmor and AER having expressed their interest in the engine concept to the FIA last week, Mecachrome has now confirmed it too wants to get involved, and reckons it would need just six months to get a power unit up and running.

"We won a few months ago the GP3 engine supplier deal from 2016, which will be an atmospheric 3.4L V6," Jean-Charles Raillat, Racing Activities director for the Mecachrome Group told Motorsport.com.

"We also won the supplier contract for GP2 series from 2017 with a turbo V6, also a 3.4L.

"The FIA request for proposal in F1 imposes a 2.5-litre maximum. Our developed engine basis is absolutely compatible with this FIA request.

"In terms of resources and capacities, we are totally there. We are used, at Mecachrome, to conceive and industrialize an engine in six months. The planning window is still quite large for us."

Two teams needed
While there have been questions raised about the financial viability of an independent engine supplier coming forward, Raillat thinks that Mecachrome can justify getting involved with just two teams signing up, because it's engine is already ready.

"It's maybe a bit easier for us than for others in that area," he said. "We already have a good existing basis that is ready – of course with development required.

"Our evaluation is at least two teams for it to be profitable for us on a financial level, and also be able to be within the targets set out by the FIA. Two teams, four cars : that's our evaluation."

He added: "What maybe differentiates Mecachrome is that it has been a very, very long time that we have been dealing with Formula 1.

"We have been managing a lot of major programmes in parallel. If you look at last year, Renault were supplying four teams : we were managing that side. We also managed GP2 Series and we will now supply GP3 Series.

"We are used to that and we have the human and technical resources. We have testing dynos. There is no specific construction plan needed.

"And the projects we manage are complete all the way, from conception to production and set-up, as well as with the provision of track assistance and exploitation."

Red Bull doubts
Red Bull has been open that it is viewing the 2017 independent engine as an opportunity for it to get itself a competitive power unit.

But despite the close links Mecachrome has with Red Bull's current partner Total, he is not so convinced that the team will automatically abandon a manufacturer route.

"Will Red Bull accept to have an engine that is not on the same basis as the others, to fight for a championship? I'm talking in terms of design. That's another question."

Tengo entendido que el máximo cilindraje de un motor de F1 es 1,6 litros en el motor de gasolina. El artículo menciona 2,5 litros.
¿Acaso cambiaron la regla otra vez?

Renault confirms works Formula 1 return with Lotus takeover

Renault chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn has confirmed the manufacturer will return to Formula 1 in 2016 as a full-time works outfit.

Following six months of protracted negotiations, Renault today signed principal contracts with regard a takeover of the Lotus F1 team, as earlier reported byAutosport.

It has confirmed that work continues on finalising the terms of the acquisition, believed to be worth €100m, "in the shortest timeframe possible".

Announcing the return, Ghosn said: "Renault had two options: to come back at 100 per cent or leave.

"After a detailed study, I have decided that Renault will be in Formula 1, starting 2016.

"The final details supplied by F1's main stakeholders gave us the confidence to accept this new challenge.

"Our ambition is to win - even if it will take some time."

Autosport understands the final details of the Lotus deal involve the transference of shares from former owners Genii Capital to Renault, which will take up to 10 days.

The final hurdles to the negotiations were cleared over the course of the season finale in Abu Dhabi when F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone met with Renault Sport president Jerome Stoll.

It resulted in a compromise being reached over the French manufacturer's share of the constructors' championship bonus and historical payments.

In light of the talks, Autosport understands Renault has committed itself to F1 for nine years, through to the end of the 2024 season, receiving an advance payment for the first six years, and retaining all of the historic rights.

The deal also means there will be a number of management changes, although it is believed the man behind Genii Capital, Gerard Lopez, will retain a role.

It is also understood Renault will revert to its traditional yellow colours when it comes to the livery.

Explaining the reasoning behind its return, a Renault statement claimed the French marque failed to gain much credit for the four consecutive years of success with Red Bull from 2010-13.

"As a full team, Renault will take maximum benefit from its victories," the statement read.

"The payback as an engine supplier proved to be limited. The return on the investment necessitated by the new engine regulations and the return in terms of image were low.

"The Lotus F1 Team effectively stands out as the best partner. Renault and Lotus F1 have known each other for 15 years and were world champions together in 2005 and 2006.

"Renault's decision to continue its involvement in Formula 1 is confirmation that it sees motorsport as an essential part of the brand's identity.

"The championship serves as a showcase for the technological expertise that Renault dials into its products for the benefit of its customers.

"Formula 1 is a means for Renault to accelerate development and remain at the forefront of the sport's technological progress.

"It simultaneously allows Renault to build bridges between the advanced technologies seen in the world championship and its road cars, particularly in the fields of electric and hybrid vehicles."

Renault says it will provide further details on its planned programme in January.
