Hola,

Hey,

My question is regarding Category 6 (i.e. 250 Mhz) cable at LAN Parties.
Do you use it and if so do you have any problems with it at short calbe lengths?

The reason I ask is because of the difficulties that lie in acheiving category 6 pathways at lengths of less than 15 metres. Because the cable is so short the effect of the twist in the cable pairs has not yet had time to act effectivley in canceling return loss. This means at the shorter length the cable does not perform as it should and can make for lost packets, collisions etc.
The cable lengths at LAN parties are generally very short, and although you probably haven't tested the channels you use with a proper tester, Have you noted that high end cable doesn't perform as it should at tiny lengths.

Also have you experienced any other cable problems short lengths that defy logic?

If someone could paraphrase that into español for me I would really appreiciated it. I am still finding my feet with spanish, it isn't spoken that much down here.

Gracias Laneros

I'm not sure about using Cat6 cable, we just use simple wiring, with a 10/100 ethernet Switch... But i'm sure you can find much information of that around the web...

Maybe it's because short cables may make some interference, try buying "armored" wiring...

Greetings from Colombia :)

i've never used that kind of cable. So, i dont even know what cat 6 is.

Sorry.

But, generally the "armored" cable is a good choice for interference problems. (ground problems.. who knows??)

bye

keep in touch .

Pd.
Welcome buddy! :p

My opinion...

So far as I know, you should be fine with the cable. Keep in mind that the most part of the LANs use 10/100 switches and so, the extra capabilities of the cable should go unnoticed. Maybe there is some source of interference. The UTP cable, even when it's great for communications, is weak in front of electromagnetics fields (ie. keep them far from subwoofers, and the like).

Hello EnempE, welcome to LANeros.com.

Well, I´m not much into cables and stuff, though I´m a gamer full time, but for what I know is that short cables are not the best choice at a LANparty, well, at anything.

The packets get lost and crash a lot making the connection too noisy so the packets will be resent over and over again.

Now, on the cat6 cable world... I´m lost :/

Welcome again :)

Suertex.

Gracias LANeros,

The cable and connectivity manufacturers that I have spoken with (i.e siemon, panduit, molex) have all commented on the problem with achieving the australian Category 6 standard ( practically the same as the TIA standard). If anyone is interested in cabling and structered cabling I could post an article on any thing related for you (this is the field i work in).

THanks so much for the great comments, Category 4 never made any impact in australia I think I have only ever seen it once. Practically all of our Lan partys are on cat 5 and Enhanced Cat 5 due to its price, speed and the fact that, If you have an idea of what you are doing, You can terminate cables by yourself.

A Question that perhaps Rafaga could answer, do you use 568-A or 568-B for termination of cable.

Thanks again

:-D
