Instructions
1. Download the
USA Bank Account Application Form from Wells Fargo website.
2. Print out all pages of the file.
3. Fill in the form called International Personal Banking (IPB) - Individual Application. (If you are a single applicant, fill in only the left column. If you are applying with a joint account holder such as your spouse, a parent or a child (over legal age), fill in both left and right columns.)
4. Fill in the Signature Card for yourself or both applicants, if applying jointly. We recommend that you do not sign this Signature Card yet, until Step 10 - see below.
5. Fill in the W-8BEN Form (Certificate of Foreign Status of Beneficial Owner for United States Tax Withholding). If you are applying with a joint applicant, you need to complete two (2) copies of the W-8BEN individually for yourself and the joint applicant.
6. You do not need to fill in the form called Payer’s Request for Taxpayer Identification Number, unless you have U.S. Effectively Connected Income (ECI). Please see the U.S. Internal Revenue Service if you would like more details. The web address is
www.irs.gov.
7. If you would like to use your Wells Fargo bank account to initiate Wire Transfers, fill in the form called Agreement for Wire Transfer. (There is another form called Outgoing Wire Transfer Request. This form is used when you need to request a Wire Transfer. It is not required to fill it in to open your account.)
8. Make a clear photocopy, enlarged if possible, of your valid passport or a government-issued identification. Note: we always recommend that you provide your current passport. If you provide a foreign government identification and it is not in English, it would cause your account opening process to be significantly delayed or even denied. (Ask Wells Fargo by email about this if in doubt. Their email address is:
IPB@wellsfargo.com or use their
web contact form)
9. Either go to your bank and ask for a letter of reference or make a photocopy of your recent bank statement (not older than three months). If your banking relationship is less than 5 years, you will need to have references or statements from 2 different banks.
10. Get your signature (and the joint applicant, if applying jointly) verified by any of these methods:
- Have your current bank send authenticated SWIFT message #199 to Wells Fargo IPB at WFBIUS6S stating that they have witnessed your signature. (Go to your bank with these forms and explain to them that you want to open a bank account in the U.S. with Wells Fargo and they require your signature to be authenticated and verified. Note: your bank may charge you a fee for this service. Go them clear instructions to authenticate and verify your signature )
- Have a US Embassy or Consulate provide you with a signature verification document.
- Visit a Wells Fargo IPB office in San Francisco, Hong Kong or London to witness your signature.
Send all completed forms to:
