I absolutely loved Batman: Arkham Asylum. I scoured ever inch of Arkham Island and uncovered ever last Riddler Trophy. While open-world in nature, being set solely in the grounds of the Asylum made for a rather close quarters experience. Now that the Caped Crusader is set to be unleashed on the big city, he's got a whole lot more turf to conquer. Rocksteady state that Batman: Arkham City will comparatively dwarf the size of ol' Arkham Island.
In an interview with Destructoid, Dax Ginn of Rocksteady Studios revealed that Arkham City will be roughly "five times bigger" in size than the grounds of Arkham Island, where the previous game took place. In terms of gameplay, Ginn states that sums up to about "25+ hours" of playtime, or about double that to clock it 100%. Rocksteady earlier confirmed that players would take control of Catwoman for 10% of the game.
With any sandbox game there's a sense of bewilderment around every corner as you begin to explore and learn the city around you. Batman's not exactly the biggest fan of Google maps however, so to overcome the "risk" of players becoming lost in the city, the bat-signal will be used to great effect to guide you to the action.
Ginn confirmed that The Riddler would be making a return in a big way in the upcoming sequel to claim revenge, but acted coy when questioned about what gamers could expect from the recently revealed Wii U version. Specifically, Ginn had to bite his tongue when questioned as to whether the Wii U release would be the "definitive version".

Batman: Arkham City is set to release in October for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. A Wii U release is scheduled for 2012.
