"I spent four years learning physics at a famous Ivy League university.
I spent 4 more years working on a PhD in theoretical astrophysics.
I've met Lee Smolin at a conference. He's a very interesting guy. I
worked with string theorists (though I was not one myself.) So, I have
a little bit of experience with at least the CULTURE of physics. I
never learned enough string theory to be able to tell if Lubos Motl's
(the critic who gave the book one star) scientific points are valid. I
will tell you this, though:
(1) String theory has been around in some form or another for over 40 years.
(2) In that time, it has not made ONE SINGLE PREDICTION that has been
verified experimentally.
(3) It is not likely that in the near future it WILL make one
prediction that can be verified experimentally.
I don't know about you, but that sure doesn't sound like science to
me. Science deals with modeling and predicting effects in the real
world. If it CAN'T make predictions about how the real world works,
then it isn't science: it's pure mathematics.
Now, don't get me wrong. There's nothing wrong with pure mathematics.
The world needs great mathematicians. But let's not all pretend that
you're doing PHYSICS when what you are actually doing is MATH."
