A short summary of physical material properties and how they act/interact to changing temperatures.
All materials exposed to cold or heat will exhibit some amount of contraction/shrinking and expansion. The amount of contraction and expansion is directly related to the atomic weight of the material. The denser a material the less it will expand. A good example of this is Water. Heat it and it expands until is becomes a gas, cool it and it shrinks and becomes a solid. The same thing, while on a much smaller and microscopic scale is happening in your AVR.
This happening maybe a few times is nothing to worry about. However a home AVR will be exposed to numerous repeated heating and cooling (Thermal cycles) events over its lifetime. This repetition then becomes a major casual factor in the eventual failure of components. Why then?
Electronic equipment are composed (made) of various materials with differing expansion and contraction rates all connected together by wire and solder joints. Take circuit boards for example. We have metal soldered to plastic, carbon-fiber, composite, ceramics and fiberglass. Each of these materials expand and contract at different rates. As one component expands at a faster rate than an attached component it creates a pulling or pushing stress effect. Same thing happens when the unit cools and everything contracts back to its cold state/size.
Repeat this process over and over again and solder joints begin to micro fracture and lose connectivity. The loss of connectivity causes the solder joint to get hotter as more current is needed to send the required signal due to loss of continuity and, well you can see where I am going with this analogy.
The key to longevity of electronics is to minimize the temperature swings and reduce the rate of cooling and heating. Maintaining a smaller temperature range is better than large temperature range swings. Slow cooling and slow heating are better then rapid cooling and heating.
Some tips for reducing the impact of temperature changes on your unit.
Don't turn on your system and Crank it up cold. This will cause the unit to rapidly heat. Some materials will expand rapidly while other materials take longer to heat to equal levels. Allow the unit to warm up before taxing it. 20 to 30 Min's should be a good rule of thumb.
Do turn off any external cooling fans as soon as you turn off the main unit. Or 10-15 Min's before you intend to turn off the unit. This will help the unit to cool at a slower rate.
I hope this helps some folks extend the life of their beloved equipment.
