They told me if I went to the Apple Store and purchased the phone there, it would be unlocked.
I'm wondering if that is the same for the 6?
Your problem was you bought it AT the T-Mobile store, which requires 40 days of service before they will unlock the phone.
To receive an unlocked T-Mobile "contract free" phone you MUST purchase from Apple, online/or instore."
Segun comenta el man, incluso los de la tienda fisica de Apple vienen libres, los unicos que no vienen libres son lo que se compran en las tiendas de TMobile

Okay, awesome. So the iPhone Contract Free model for T Mobile is able to be used on T Mobile here in the US, but is able to be used internationally automatically by just taking out the nano-SIM and replacing it with one from the GSM carrier you're wanting to use, worldwide!
Segun esto, esta desbloqueado para cualquier operador en el mundo, excepto los operados de estados unidos

Just to wrap everything up so everyone doesn't have to read the whole thread through:
The T-Mobile version sold through Apple Retail or Online Store is Unlocked. Period.
It differs from the version (they call sim-free/unlocked) as the T-Mobile version comes with a T-Mobile sim already inserted in the phone and it does NOT include the small metal ejector tool. But apart from the included sim and non-included ejector tool, the T-Mobile version from Apple Retail and Online Store is unlocked!
The T-Mobile version through T-Mobile is NOT unlocked, but can be unlocked later if you use the phone for 40 days and charge the account with a minimum of 100 USD.
Hope that clears any misunderstandings.
Cheers
