Hello,
I'm sorry for the English, but I write much better in English than in Spanish. I, too, am unhappy with the price we are all paying for Uniweb. I go over my cupo every month, and it's ridiculous to pay so much money just to be able to have high speed internet. I've spent the last several months looking for options as all of you have, and since I just ran across this forum, I wanted to share what I have found.
1) Cable Pacifico has been talking about high speed for several months now, and they have it on their sign in Ciudad Jardin. I went in in March, and they said that next month they would be offering the service. I went in in April, and they said next month. I've visited them every month since, and apparently they are waiting on the engineers from Medellin to install what they need for high speed internet over their existing cable structure. Now they're saying in late July or August. I managed to get someone to talk about their pricing structure, and although he wasn't 100 sure, it sounds a lot like Uniweb with topes on the amounts you can download. So, it basically sucks.
2) I've found the same things about Telesat that you have, only available in apartment buildings or to empresas. Apparently, they're going to roll out service in July or August, too, but "el proximo mes" is starting to sound a lot like "mañana" now - who knows if it will ever happen.
3) I've tried to get ahold of Emcali, but I haven't been able to. Nevertheless, it seems like paying 30 pesos or more every three minutes would add up pretty fast.
4) I called Vision Satelite today AGAIN, and they're also saying next month. I didn't ask about pricing, but from what I've seen here, it looks OK. Nevertheless, "el proximo mes" could mean anything.
5) Telecom does look like the best deal, and the people I've talked to there seem serious. If their pricing structure is similar to what they have in other cities, it could be at least one option. Nevertheless, again, next month could mean next year.
6) I got a quote from Skynet, but the price is completely prohibitive.
7) I got another quote from Axesat, which offers satelite service to neighborhoods or condiminios. They need at least five houses to sign up to make it happen all within a kilometer of each other. They are charging $279,000 to install and then $99,000 a month for 128k. There is a guy living about half a kilometer from me who has the service (Jockey Club); apparently he paid up front so he could get it. They're looking for more subscribers in this area (Ciudad Jardin), but as mentioned, they'll install their equipment anywhere if they get five houses. They're offering me a chance to sign up for the same price even though there are not five houses yet.
I'm considering the Axesat deal, but I'll probably wait a month or so to see what happens with the others. It will be kind of a bummer to go from 900k to 128k, but at least I won't be worrying about going over the damn limit every month.
It is a shame that Cali doesn't have better options. As you've all mentioned, Bogota has great deals, and I know that in the States you can get 2 to 3Mb download for about 40US a month. It really sucks. It also sucks that no one seems to be promoting or advertising. I know that you could get 100's on board for service if they had the chance.
Anyway, if anyone knows anything about Axesat, please let me know. If anyone is on a 128k connection, how do you like it (especially if you've switched from Uniweb)? I know that one day, we'll have a lot more options, but it's really frustrating now.
Tom
