Cristianpark: hi guys, I have a question related to Android version and Linux Kernel version
(10:41:48) helicopter88: what's your question?
(10:43:45) Cristianpark:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_version_history here you can see kernel versions used by android versions
(10:44:16) Cristianpark: let's say Android 2.3.x, it says it uses 2.26.35.x kernel
(10:44:33) helicopter88: it should be 2.6.35.x kernel
(10:45:45) Cristianpark: ok, I want to install CM7 on my motorola Defy (CM7 says is Android 2.3.7) and as far as I know I don't have to flash any SBF file (I suppose those files have new kernel)
(10:46:02) Rogue|Panda: YAY!
(10:46:15) helicopter88: Cristianpark: and?
(10:46:47) Cristianpark: so, I updte from Android 2.2 to 2.3.7 (I have a doubt there) and stick at kernel 2.26.32.x
(10:47:24) helicopter88: Check what version you have now
(10:47:34) Cristianpark: I asked this question in few forums and some people posted images like this
http://goo.gl/kIVIK
(10:47:46) helicopter88: "uname -r " should tell you
(10:48:14) Rogue|Panda: I missed the question
(10:48:31) helicopter88: I've missed that too
(10:48:33) Cristianpark: they installed CM7 and have Android 2.3.7 but are in 2.26.32.x kernel, I will post my output right know
(10:48:35) Rogue|Panda: I can post an image though if you want
(10:48:37) Cristianpark: the question is
(10:49:04) Cristianpark: is Android version dependent of a Kernel version?
(10:49:15) helicopter88: I've ran ICS on .27
(10:49:21) Rogue|Panda: not totally
(10:49:31) helicopter88: 2.6.27
(10:51:25) Cristianpark: mmmm I see, and why it says then that I.C.S have kernel 3.0.x?
(10:51:37) Cristianpark: how can you upgrade your kernel?
(10:51:42) Cristianpark: is that possible?
(10:51:44) helicopter88: On my Evo 3d,ics runs more than fine on 2.6.35
(10:51:59) helicopter88: you can upgrade the kernel as long as you clone the source and make it working
(10:54:05) Cristianpark: helicopter88, can you point me to resources about that? i'm new to Android but not to linux and I like to know more on official code of android, how to install 'official I.C.S' on a Defy i.e
(10:54:11) Rogue|Panda: upgrading the kernel is easy... if you know how to tweak the kernel version you want into working and then compile it
(10:55:32) Rogue|Panda:
http://developer.android.com/index.html
(10:55:53) Cristianpark: hahaha I'm following you guys, but I'm not familiar with how to accomplish this with Android, let's say where to get kernel versions of so
(10:55:53) Rogue|Panda: Cristianpark: why do you feel the need to change the kernel?
(10:56:16) helicopter88: Cristianpark: There's a github for linux kernels
(10:56:41) Cristianpark: I'm not in need of changing the kernel, I just want to get familiar with the process of install new versions of Android in my device
(10:56:41) Rogue|Panda: Cristianpark: get on the forums and start reading, do a LOT of reading
(10:57:11) Rogue|Panda: Cristianpark: you just want to be familiar with putting new versions of android on your phone?
(10:57:26) Rogue|Panda: you are thinking WAY too deep into this one
(10:57:48) Cristianpark: Rogue: at first, but I want to go deeper as I can
(10:57:55) Rogue|Panda: download ROM, boot into recovery, backup, wipe, flash ROM
(10:57:59) Rogue|Panda: that is it
(10:58:16) Cristianpark: yes, but I want to know why is the need of custom ROM
(10:58:24) helicopter88: ROM is such a strong word
(10:58:28) helicopter88: should be BUILD
(10:58:29) Rogue|Panda: because we can
(10:58:39) Cristianpark: let's say, I.C.S is out there
(10:59:02) Rogue|Panda: Cristianpark: there isnt always a ''need''
(10:59:06) Cristianpark: do I have to wait until CM9 is ready or can I install it into my device
(10:59:22) Cristianpark: that's my big question
(10:59:33) Rogue|Panda: you can see if there are any builds in progress and try them out
(10:59:33) helicopter88: Cristianpark: you can run repo sync and make
(11:01:13) Rogue|Panda: Cristianpark: go on to the websites and read, seee what is offered
(11:02:08) Cristianpark: Thanks Rogue, I will look forward on builds of Android versions and how to install them into devices
(11:03:45) Rogue|Panda: Cristianpark: go to xda or rootzwiki , find your device and start reading the threads
(11:04:29) Rogue|Panda: go to the cyanogenmod wiki and see if your phone is supported and do some reading on there
